I go back even further! I attended B'nai B'rith Camp as a child for a wonderful three week period. We learned many songs in Yiddish, and I learned that archery is not designed for left handed people like me. I did learn that I could sing a song in front of the campers and get applause. A wonderful revelation. Then as a teen, I was a counsellor. I was hired to also help with the music and drama and my huge summer salary was under $100. Wow! I loved the time with my co-counsellors, a new one each session. The first three weeks, we had the younger children, lots of fun, but carrying them to washrooms in the dead of night was exhausting. The mid range girls were in the second session, and the girls only two years younger than ourselves, proved to be the most challenging. I could write a book! The best time was working on the session ending shows done by counsellors and the campers was a great challenge and lots of fun. I worked hard to write parodies of songs to recall the things we did for the sessions. A very creative challenge but I love every minute. On our days off, we would go into Orillia, as the girls' camp was at Longford Mills. But we also "hitched" to Northland a couple of times. (Don't tell my children I did that!). We were welcomed and the sing-alongs were the most fun. The Camp area was amazing! I believe that the year I was counsellor was the last year the camps were separate. Lots of great memories!
It's beautiful to be able to share your happy place with the boys!
Thanks for letting us relive your camper summers with you. :-)
