Why My Substack Has a Paywall
Shortly after I created my Substack account, I decided to put some of my posts and articles behind a paywall. As an author, there is modest compensation for book sales. Several dollars per book sold. Even less for e-books.
My nonfiction books cost several thousand dollars to publish. I’m paying for research, documents, access to data, investment in software, advertisement, editing and probably some other things I’ve forgotten about. In addition, I might spend 1,000 to 2,000 hours creating a book. Promoting writing is exhausting. The breakeven point is difficult to achieve. But I love what I do. It’s empowering, and I feel I’m making a contribution to the world.
I’ve created this Substack account to provided updates on my work through a free Newsletter. As well, I can share more of my writing because the time between book releases can be considerable between writing and finding a publisher. In the past year I’ve posted over 100 articles. When people pay for a full subscription it supports my writing career. At $80 per year (or $8 per month) you are paying less than $1 per article.
I thank you for reading my work and if you can support me I would dearly appreciate it.

It is the best money I spend each month.
